A colleague who made a longjourney up M6 in thick fog last week made some interesting comments about the proposed regulations enforcing the use of dipped headlights in poor visibility. By and large, he reports, the standard of driving by all motorway users was good, with everyone taking extra care.
It seemed, however, that there was almost an unwritten law that those few travelling too fast were showing the least lights. Both trucks and cars which were going too fast for the conditions showed only sidelights or in some cases no lights at all. Seems as if far too many people still do not appreciate the "see and be seen" concept which the new regulations aim to promote. The only problem I can see is that the new regulations will he terribly difficult to enforce, with convictions depending upon a policeman's view of the conditions.
