A LOW COST, "do-ityourself" cab system was on display last week at the annual American Society of Automotive Engineers' conference in Detroit. The cab, produced by United States Steel for low-volume production, was among exhibits at an exhibition with the theme "Resources conservation".

Known as the Galva system, the US Steel cab has straightline steel members welded at the joints, It is made of square and rectangular tubing. Steel sheets are attached to the tubular frame structure.

Claimed advantages of the cab-building method are said to include more space than with conventional trucks of comparable size and better visibility too. By avoiding the need for expensive metal working equipment in low-volume truck-building operations, the new design is said to provide truck makers with manufacturing flexibility at low cost.

Also on show at the exhibition was a new design of automotive steam engine, said to be competitive in cost and performance terms with internal combustion engines. Although currently fitted to a Volkswa the engine, develope Carter Enterprises said to be cap; development for applications.

The new engine i be equal to the combustion engine power to volume r cost.

A technical sessic conference was t( there are now 107 delivery vehicles at the US and Canad were showing cost over comparative with internal cor engines.
