THE NUMBER of persons hurt in goods vehicle accidents fell by eight per cent to 4,916 during July to September last year compared with the figures for the corresponding period for 1973. And a spotcheck analysis by the DoE shows that the volume of goods vehicle traffic fell by five per cent.
-Public service vehicle casualties rose two per cent to 4,013 — but traffic volume
went up too, by one per cent.
When the 50mph speed limit was in force — January to March — casualties generally showed a surprisingly high reduction; but the drop is not entirely attributed to the 50 mph limit as there was a spreadover improvement to other months, and the DoE mentions changes in travel patterns and drivers' behaviour associated with the need to save fuel.
