IF, after a tachograph has been fitted, a driver reduces tyre wear and maintenance costs and improves fuel consumption, is he entitled to a share of the cash saving? Ken Rogers, senior vice-chairman of the Road Haulage Association, thinks he is.
The implication is that before positive evidence of driving practices became available in the tachograph chart, the driver was doing less than his best. I question whether anyone is entitled to an extra reward for .doing his job properly only after he has been found out.
In any event, trades unions, dedicated to universal mediocrity, would be unlikely to welcome merit pay and the employer who introduced it might find his generosity less than appreciated.
