FUEL leaks are the most common cause of energy loss in lorry operation, says the Freight Transport Association.

A survey of 485 vehicles, selected at random from some 2000 inspected regularly under contract each week, showed of the 390 with some form of tiefect, that 175 (44.9 per cent) had faults associated with the fuel system.

Leaks from pipes, filters, lift pumps, injection equipment and fuel tanks numbered among the 22 different types of defects disclosed along wit clutch slip, engine tickove adjustment and overheating.

The sample is believed t receive a better than average standard of maintenance indi cating that the degree of fuel loss could be much greater.
