ALTHOUGH the traffic ex, pected to be using M25 in tin late 1990s calls for more thar dual three-lane carriageways the Government does not in tend to build four lanes.
This emerged in the Corn mons last week when Pete Fry (Tory, Wellingborough asked about the M4-M40 sec tion of the M25, and wanted t( know why the desigi standards laid down had bee/ ignored.
Parliamentary Secretary fo Transport Kenneth Clarke ad mitted that the predictei volume and pattern of traffi. for the late 1990s slightly ex ceeded the figure at which according to Technica Memorandum H6/74, dua three-lane carriageway would be appropriate.
But they did not, in his DE partment's view, exceed it b such a margin as to warran the economic and environ mental consequences 43 building a dual four-lan motorway now.
Mr Clarke pointed out the the design of the structure allowed for widening to du• four-lanes if this prove necessary.
He did not think he would b justified in reopening the d( cision at this stage in view ( the further delay to this se( tion of the M25 which woul result.
