From the commercial vehicle viewpoint, the show is a disappointment. Only one exhibit — a Belaz 545 dump truck — can be seen to represent the whole of what is available from the USSR at the heavier end of the commercial vehicle market.
UMO Plant Ltd of Letchworth, Herts, is the sole concessionaire for this equipment in the UK.
The 545 has a scoop-shaped tipping body of 20.3cum (26.5cuyd) with the load heaped. All-up weight with a 30,000 kg payload is given as 51,700kg. It uses a 1112 turbocharged engine rated at 420bhp at 2100 rpm (SAE) providing a maximum torque of 1491 Nm (1100 lbft) at 150Orpm.
The transmission includes a torque converter and a fivespeed gearbox with a fifthgear ratio of 0.625 to 1 driving through a single-reduction axle, ratio 3.166, to give a top speed of 65km/h (40.6mph). Maximum gradeability is quoted at 40 per cent.
