believe the general standard of driving on British roads is bad — but everyone thinks that everyone else is to blame. No surprises there.
Rather more disturbing is the news that as many as 1.5 million motorists drive while over the legal alcohol limit. Over 60% of those surveyed had knowingly broken the speed limit in the past six months, and a third of those questioned said they had driven while feeling very tired — an action which could lead to prosecution if proposals in the new White Paper on road traffic laws are accepted. All this does not seem to dent their self-esteem one iota, however.
As for the future, 85% believe that all vehicles will be required to use unleaded fuel by the year 2001; 56% believe cars will be banned from all town centres, and over half fear that rush hour traffic in London will be at a walking pace (which judging by recent experience, would be an improvement.
The survey calculates that an extra 2.6 million cars will flood on to the roads in the next two years. • Flushed with success in the "Loo of the Year" award, Shell's retail divisional manager, John Bamberg, was spotted brandishing one of the brushes which doubtless helped win the prize.
Shell took top honours in a competition, sponsored by the British Tourist Authority and the Tidy Britain Group.
