Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• TNT Express UK is making a fresh plea to the Government to end the Post Office's monopoly following the latest report from the Adam Smith Institute.

The report says the Post Office should be privatised, broken up and at least one private sector competitor should be licensed to deliver letters as "a nationalised monopoly cannot hope to cater for the range of services of the type and quality which the public want".

It criticises existing services, failure to meet target delivery times, poor labour relations and the withdrawal from a number of useful services.

TNT is pressing for an urgent meeting with the Depart

ment of Trade and Industry to discuss the Post Office report.

However, there is no immediate prospect of Government action despite some MPs pressing for proposals in the next Conservative election manifesto. Last week, a bid by Conservative MP John Bowis to remove the Post Office's exclusive privilege to deliver letters was defeated in the Commons by a majority of 74. CI Royal Mail Parcels, part of the Post Office, has introduced a new service which guarantees next-day parcel delivery by close of business. It will be a variation of the Super 48 service which began two years ago and guaranteed delivery within two days.
