• Renault will launch a new generation of Midliner rigid trucks at the Turin motor show in late April. The French-built light-to-middleweight vehicles will have two new size bands from six to nine tonnes GVW and from 10 to 15 tonnes GVW with updated front and rear suspension systems, new engines and new cabs.
Commercial Motor understands that the trucks will be available on the Continent by early summer and could be in the UK by September.
The current Continental spec for the 7.5-tonne Midliner 150, due for introduction here last year, includes the heavily reworked "Club of Four" cab originally developed by Magirus, Renault, Daf and Volvo, a six-cylinder MIDR 06.02.26 diesel engine with chargecooling and a 159kW (216bhp) power rating at 2,350 rpm, an impressive 805Nm peak tor que, air-over-hydraulic drum brakes, and an all-synchromesh nine-speed splitter gearbox.
Air suspension looks a likely innovation on the vehicles and the new Midliner stable could well put the future of the current UK Commando range in doubt.
