• A special sub-committee has been set up by Berwick County Council to consider the serious problems posed by the imminent withdrawal of rural bus services by Eastern Scottish. The axing of services may affect the joint industrial development programme of the four burgh councils in the county, the county council and the Eastern Borders Development Association.
The area development officer, Mr A. John Reid, has warned that the mobility of labour forces would definitely be reduced, as would the areas from which firms in small towns could obtain labour. The prosperity of towns and villages depended on the bus services, he said.
Subsidies to independent operators to supply bus services will be considered by the committee, as will the feasibility of introducing a mail bus service similar to that operating in the neighbouring county of East Lothian. This latter service was described in CM November 7 1969.
