• Two further Atkinson tractive units are now to be available with the Gardner 8LXB eight-cylinder diesel engine. This power unit was first used by the manufacturer in 6 x 2 rear-steer tractors .introduced at last year's Commercial Motor Show.

The 8LXB produces 240 bhp at 1,850 rpm and a maximum torque of 695 lb ft at 1,000/ 1,200 rpm. The two additional Atkinson models for which it can now be specified are the Borderer four-wheeler for 32-tons-gross operation and 6 x 4 Venturer which can be operated at up to 45 tons gross.

With the Gardner 8LXB, model designations become T.3448XB and T.4568XB respectively but there is no change to the basic specification. Until now the Borderer 4 x 2 has been available with the Cummins 230 or 205 bhp engine or the Gardner 6LXB 150 bhp unit. These will continue to be offered as will be Cummins turbocharged 270 bhp engine in the Venturer 6 x 4.

The Borderer T.3448XB has a 10ft Sin. wheelbase like other models in the range and its specification includes a Fuller Roadranger 'nine-speed overdrive gearbox and K irkstall D85 hub reduction rear axle. The same gearbox is used in the 12ft 9in. wheelbase 6 x 4 and this has an Eaton 38 DP through-drive bogie as standard with four-spring suspension.
