Electrically Welded Frame Joints Enable Great Strength to be Combined with Lightness

WELL known in connection with the manufacture of rigid six-wheeled conversions, Baico Patents, Ltd., Delco Place, 827-320, High Road, Chiswick, London, W.4, has introduced an articulated semi-trailer for use with motive units of a number of prominent makes, and intended to carry pay-loads of from 4 tons to 10 tons.

The trailing unit is quickly detachable, and is provided

with castor wheels which can be raised and lowered by lined; the turntable is designed to fit readily to the chassis of the towing unit, and a specially interesting constructional feature is that every frame-member joint is electrically welded, so that actually the complete frame is a one-piece job. The 'same applies to the turntable and its mountings Only those fittings which carrymoving parts and which, therefore, need to be detachable, are secured to the frame by bolts.

On the standard 4-ton platform-type semi-trailer made by the concern, the steel frame is extended to the full width of the wooden platform, and the simple construction, made possible by the use of welded joints, is noteworthy.

The moving member of the turntable rotates in four blocks or gukies, which are adjustable (by the removal of shims) and easily renewable. shaped channels on the top of the turntable are designed to guide a pair of rollers, which are mounted below the front end of the trailer frame, into the correct position for couplinr‘b to the towing unit. Two lugs on the sides of the turntable coincide with the hollow axle upon which the rollers run. A long hinge-pin, shown in an accompanying illustration in position in the lugs, is passed through the axle to couple the two units.

Castor wheels, mounted on ball-bearing swivels, are raised and lowered by a worm and nut, the latter being linked 0 the castor-wheel legs. The worm is rotated through bevel gear by it handle on the near side of the chassis, A Dewandre vacuum cylinder is used for applying the fully compensated brakes on the trailing wheels, and no cables are used in the system, in every case rods connecting, the links and levers. The two-piece brake cross-shaft is carried on four ballbearings. An interesting feature in connection with the braking system is that the tension rod from the servo cylinder acts onthe end of a lever which is arranged to give a 2-to-1 pull on the main brake-rod. Three adjustments are provided. A hand lever, working at the rear of the near side, applies the brake when the trailer is disconnected, The twin rear wheels run on specially designed Timken roller bearings, and the axle is carried on two semi-elliptic springs shackled at the rear:

With 32-in. by 6-in, heavy-duty tyres, the Baico semitrailer chassis for an 18-ft. body and complete with turntable is priced at £124, to which £10 must be added if vacuum brakes are installed. Without the turntable the chassis alone costs £109. A steel-framed platform body with 18-in. steel and wood front end costs 130, or with drop sides and tailboard, £44.
