NOT content with harassing road transport by propaganda and recommendations for its restriction, the railways are adopting the policy of stimulating the police into activity against hauliers and other users of commercial vehicles. Instances have occurred recently in which the attention of the police has almost amounted to persecution, vehicles being trapped for exceeding the legal speeds by very small amounts, and the explanation given has been that the railway officials were forcing the authorities to take action.
The application of such pressure is most unBritish and savours of the schoolboy sneak.
