INDUSTRY SECRETARY Patrick Jenkin this week called for the increase in maximum lorry weights to be authorised.
He told the Conservative Party Conference in Brighton on Tuesday that the Government had a moral imperative to act on employment by strengthening industry and cutting its costs.
"Parliament, too, can help industry cut costs by allowing the lorries on our roads to carry full loads. It wouldn't increase public spending and would actually help the environment," he said.
Mr Jenkin is the first Cabinet Minister in months to back Transport Secretary Howell.
