TRANSPORT 2000, the pro-public transport pressure group, is launching a campaign to stop the decline of public transport services.
It is circulating a broadsheet in which the case for more expenditure on public transport is stated, and is urging people to lobby their MPs and local councillors about the reduced finance being made available for public transport.
The broadsheet says that county councils must provide more financial support for local bus services, and adds: "Fares must be cut and services increased to maintain a coherent network."
It wants the Government to reverse its plans to control public transport subsidies, and says that passengers should be encouraged to interchange between road and rail services.
Launching the campaign, Transport 2000 director Nick Lester said: "For the last few years, public transport has taken the brunt of cuts in transport expenditure. It's now high time that users, and everyone else, told councillors, MPs, and the Transport Secretary that this rundown must stop."
