MAN will be exhibiting its 281 and 321 tractive units at the Motor Show later this month and the new models will be available in this country from the end of October.
There are three 4x2 tractive unit models in the new-to-the UK range — the 16.281 and 16.321 with a design gcw of 44 tonnes (43.3 tons), and the 19.321 with a design gcw of 50 tonnes (49.2 tons). The 16.281 is a direct replacement for the 16.280 (CM June 10). The 16.240 with naturally aspirated 240hpj engine will continue to be sold in the UK.
The major change on the 281 and 321 models is to the engine, now charge-cooled and fitted with a patented resonant induction system, but changes have also been made to the transmission, tyre equipment, cab, and to some chassis equipment. MAN has also extended its recommended oil change interval from 1 0,0 0 0 km to 30,000km, extended service schedule intervals by 33 per cent with the new models and improved and expanded its aftersales service.
System 6 Engines. The charge-cooled engine variants are referred to as "System 6" engines.
Both the 281 and 321 use the same basic turbocharged and charge-cooled engine, a development of the in-line six, 11.4-litre unit.
In the 281 the D2566 MKG engine has a maximum power rating of 2 0 6kW (2 7 6bhp) at 2,000rpm and develops maximum torque of 1175Nm (866Ib ft) between 1,300 and 1,600rpm.
The 321 engine has the same model number but its fuel injection equipment is set to give a maximum power rating of 235kW (315bhp) at 1,800 to 2,000rpm and maximum torque of 1,350Nm (995Ib ft) is developed between 1,200 and 1,600rpm. All these ratings are net to the BSAu 141a standard.
Both these engines have the same resonant induction system, called TIR (Tuned Induction Resonance) by MAN, which has been developed as one means of overcoming the problems of lack of response and lack of torque at low speed that are associated with conventiar turbocharged engines. MAI system is said to be patented an Hungarian engineer and br under licence by the West G man manufacturer.
Transmission. The 16.2 16.321 and 19.321 are all fitted standard with Fuller RIO 11( 13-speed gearboxes with new multi-contact ("mul mesh") gearing. The hub redi tion MAN H7 rear axle is used all three models, with a capac of 11,000kg on the 16.281 a 16.231 and 13,000kg on t 19.321.
Michelin 80 series (80 per CE aspect ratio) Pilate radial tyr are fitted as standard to all t new MAN models.
Cab changes on the System models include a new thrE piece, plastic-covered fro bumper, simplified cab lowed' system; and a revised cab tenor with changed bunks sleeper model, more extensi carpeting, pneumatic driver suspension seat and an electr nically operated exhaust bra with a separate engine stc control.
In the area of after-sales SE vice, MAN-VW has announcr that a contract maintenance now available for all Man pr ducts and all MAN service poin in the EEC are now operating conjunction with DKV.
In conjunction with Tuff-Ko Dinol in the UK MAN-VW offering a five-year anti-corr, sion package which will requil an annual vehicle inspection.
MAN's confidence in its cab resistance to corrosion has beE boosted by the opening thrE weeks ago of its new ca painting plant in which th electrophonetic drip system ha been changed from anodic to cr thodic. The new process it cludes a cavity sealant trea ment.
