THE BRIDGE by-pass is finally open—much to the relief of up to 700 truck drivers using the road to Dover every day.
The new road in Kent was opened by Transport Minister Dr John Gilbert last week. He told an audience at the opening that there had been 34 accidents in and around the village in three years.
He said: "Though only 2i miles long it is an important link in the comprehensive improvement of the A2 trunk road and will play its part in helping British industry take its goods more efficiently to the Channel ports."
Dr Gilbert also talked about the rest of the 4,500 mile network of roads which is planned in this country. He said that the network would provide a high standard of routes connecting the main centres of population, industry and the ports.
"Improved roads help both to cut transport costs and hence the costs of the goods in the shops and to improve the efficiency of all our commercial and industrial activities," said Dr Gilbert.
But he warned that the roads programme is not endless. The Government plan is to finish the 4,500 mile scheme by the 1990s. "Our forecasts show that traffic growth will begin to tail off at that point so that the network will serve us well into the next century."
