Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

OVERTIME will be banned at British Leyland's truck and bus factories in Lancashire from the beginning of next month unless a pay row is settled. Almost 9,000 workers agreed at a mass meeting last week to take action in a bid to force payment of a £52 lump sum.

The money is part of a deal agreed last July under which workers received increases of £6 a week plus the lump sum. But the settlement was caught by the pay policy and the company, after an approach by the Government, withdrew the £52 offer.

Now the Workers have revived the claim and are de manding that the money should be paid this year. The overtime ban is scheduled to begin the day after the factories restart after the summer holiday.

A spokesman for British Leyland said that it was an un fortunate situation. "The company is in a cleft stick. If we were allowed to under the wages policy we would pay the lump sum."
