HEAVY GOODS vehicles registered abroad will not be required to have sideguards as a condition of operating in Britain.

Transport Secretary David Howell told Shadow Secretary Albert Booth that the move wet ruled out by international conventions which allowed fret passage to visiting foreigr vehicles, subject only to basic internationally agreed safety requirements.

Mr Booth had asked for the sideguard requirement because of the claim by Norfolk Line tha it would not have to meet British sideguard regulations because its trailers were registerec abroad.
