THE AVERAGE price of diesel oil in the UK is 37p per litre at the pumps, about 0.5p dearer than petrol.

This compares with a diesel oil price of 17p per litre in December 1978, according to figures from the International Road Transport Union.

France enjoys a slightly cheaper rate at 34p per litre, while prices in West Germany average 40p.

Italian prices have reached 26p per litre, while the Netherlands and Portugal are slightly higher at 27p.

Diesel oil in Spain is 26p, in Sweden 21p, and in Switzerland 43.5p.
