AT LEAST half of the Transport and General Workers Union's members on Tyneside could defy Union policy and buy shares in a management/employee-owned National Freight Company, according to a Union official.

Area organiser Geoff Eggleston told CM that some members have boycotted audio/visual displays about the plan when they have been told of the Union's opposition to the buy-out (CM, July 25), but said that a majority of members think the plan is a constructive idea.

• He said he has no doubt that those members will go ahead and buy shares, regardless of the TGWU policy, especially as the option is for another company to take over and, possibly, close down unprofitable sections.

Mr Eggleston doubted whether the Labour Party could
