FIGURES released by the De partment of Transport relatin! to MoT failures for 1980 shov that 30,000 light commercia vehicles, 740,000 cars an 40,000 motorcycles failed be cause one or more tyres wa; under the legal minimum.
Fifteen per cent of the 41 pe cent overall failure rate was dui to faulty tyres, but a Nationa Tyre Distributors Associatior survey indicates the situation actually much worse. It claim: that 49.36 of all tyres change( during a week in May wen illegal.
The NTDA is pressing the De partment of Transport to chang( the tyre laws to include minimum tread depth require ment of 1.6mm across the tyre': full width.
