www.acas.org.uk—since May 20 01 Acas, the conciliation and arbitration service, has offered a quicker, less formal alternative to employment tribunals to hear cases of alleged unfair dismissal.
Neither employee nor employer can be forced to attend a hearing but the decision of Am is, in effect, final: there is no appeal. The website includes list of telephone helplines across the UK.
