• by Toby Clark Nissan and Mazda have revised their ranges of 4x4 pickups with a new cab for Mazda's B-Series and a new engine and styling—and lower prices—for the Nissan Pickup.
The most visible change to the Nissan range is the restyled nose, which makes it look more like the firm's other 4x4s. The load area has been changed too, with a smoother tailgate and other changes claimed to reduce wind noise.
However, the most significant change is the adoption of a more powerful 2.5-litre turbo-diesel rated at 131hp (28% more than the previous model) with maximum torque of 304Nm; an increase of 24%. These figures make it easily the most powerful pickup on the market, and Nissan also claims that fuel consumption should be improved by 15%.
All models come with a lowrange transfer box and a limited-slip rear differential.
Nissan has also cut the prices of 4x4 Pickup variants by between £721 and £991. The biggest reductions come on the basic Standard Cab model, with slightly smaller cuts on King Cab and Double Cab variants.
Mazda's changes are less dramatic: the firm has introduced a Stretch Cab version of its 8-Series 4x4 pickup. Like Nissan's King
Cab, the 214,298 Stretch Cab has more interior space than a single cab with extra occasional seating. Mazda still offers a naturallyaspirated diesel and a turbo-diesel in its single-cab pickups; the former has been rerated to give B3hp (5hp more than before) with 195Nm of torque (up by 27Nro).
