Steven Ails, for the two companies, had said that three of the drivers had told the IC that they were under pressure to get the work done. Jones pointed out that if they were on the road longer, they would get paid more, therefore, it was not In their interest to speed.

The IC said there had been breaches of the drivers' hours rules and the use of the wrong type of tachograph records on a very widespread scale. It was a very real problem as noone had spotted it. Excess speeds were a serious road safety issue.

The hearing was adjourned until 8 March when evidence will be given about the two companies' maintenance records.
