Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

company has put an electric vehicle into service for night work because of its silent operation. Is there any other advantage to operating electric vehicles of this size after discounting their disadvantages such as loss of carrying capacity from the need to carry batteries?

A It depends on what you mean by advantages. For instance, Paragraph 22 of the first schedule of the Goods Vehicles (Operators' Licences) Regulations 1969 exempts electrically propelled vehicles from operators' licensing requirements irrespective of weight. Thus, there is no need for the driver to keep records though he should observe the drivers' hours regulations.

For Excise purposes the weight of the accumulators used to provide power for propulsion can be excluded in calculating the unladen weight and in addition a low rate of duty is payable.

Electrically propelled vehicles are exempted from plating and testing even though they exceed 30 cwt unladen weight under paragraph 10 of the second schedule of the Goods Vehicles (Plating and Testing) Regulations 1971.

There are also exemptions from some of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1973.
