Regulation 120 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1973 restricts the distance between drawing and towed vehicles to 4.5 metres (14 ft 9.2 in) when a rope or chain is used. Where the distance between vehicles exceeds 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) the towing attachment must be made clearly visible — a piece of coloured rag would suffice.
