• ICI Chemicals & Polymers is to shut its Runcorn tanker depot with the loss of 80 jobs. It is expected that the 55 drivers and other staff will be offered work elsewhere in ICI or with hauliers Suttons and Linkman, which now take on the operation.

ICI says the closure is because of the "considerable financial premium" incurred by running an own-account operation. Widnes-based Suttons and Linkman of Runcorn will take over the work in the summer.

The operators which ten dered for the business were already working for ICI in its northern operations. Suttons and Linkman have both won three-year contracts. Richard Kirby, boss of Linkrnans, says his firm won its share on the grounds of "safety, quality, reliability and price".

Linkman says its contract, worth a total of £4m, will employ 14 tractive units and 30 tanker trailers.

ICI says the two companies will use less vehicles in total than the current fleet of 50 tractors and 70 tankers.
