Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A British scientist has won a top technology award for a revolutionary piston design, which he says is suitable for trucks.

Keith Sugden of Manchester topped the transport category in the British Innovation Awards in London last week with his Phyllis piston.

The piston is different from conventional models because it uses a T-shaped little end which does away with the need for a gudgeon pin. This reduces the mass of the piston by up to 17%, says Sugden.

He is trying to raise money to have the invention patented and hopes to start production independently within two years, or to interest a major manufacturer in the idea.
