• The row over HGV training in an ancient Lancashire market town (CM 31 January-6 February) has gained fresh momentum this week with loca councillors pressing for an end to training and the implementation of a lorry ban.
Fylde Borough Council has taken two further steps to end the lorry training in Kirkham — it has written to the Road Transport Industry Training Board calling on its members to "cease using Kirkham and Wesham for training and testing of HGV vehicles", and it is urging Lancashire County Council to impose a weight ban.
Local training schools fear that a ban on training would lead to the closure of the Kirkham test centre, forcing up the cost of their courses. But Kirkham councillor Bob Fisher, who is leading the campaign against lorry training, insists he is not trying to close the test centre.
