WOMEN drivers in haulage? With power-assisted YV steering and modern vehicles they could certainly do the job, according to Mr. A. Prentice, chairman of the Scottish section of the Institute of Transport.
He said transport efficiency would have to be increased to offset the labour shortage, and to try to attract men from other industries. This could be done only by offering workers conditions which compared favourably with those in industry in general.
CENTRALIZED AMBULANCES?
THE ambulance service operated by Cheshire County Council will probably soon be brought under unified control from headquarters, with operations directed by radio. The health committee have approved a scheme whereby a county ambulance officer will be appointed to supervise the fleet from county headquarters.
At present, ambulances work on a divisional basis, with a large measure of local control.
