intending• passenger finds that
I an operator's -excursion seats are
• bOoked, there is, nothing illegal in the Operator advising him that a private party
• is being organized by someone else. This was claimed by Mr.. H. Backhouse at Lytham St. Antics, on Tuesday, when the
• North Western Traffic Commissioners • were hearing an application by Titterington's Coaches, Ltd., Sabden, for variation • of their excursion licences.
The question arose when 'Mr. F.
• Willidmsnn; chairman, heard that Titterington'slsecretary, Mrs. J. M. Pollard, a director of the company, was also a director* of Central Motors (Burnley). Ltd.. who operated coaches on contract. Vr. Backhouse said it was legal for an operator to run both private parties and excursions, provided the private-party coaches did not pick up and set down at an advertised point.
Titterington's wanted to add 21 excursions to the licence. including 12 for
• Burnley P.C.-away matches. Mr. Backhouse pointed out that British Railways closed Padiham station this year. and the applicants were entitled to some of the former rail football traffic.
There were objections from Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., W. C. Standerwick. Ltd., D. Tattersall, Ltd., San down Tours (Burnley), Ltd.. and A. Storey, Ltd. The five objectors did not oppose a request for an alteration to the company's licence covering excursions from Padiham to Blackpool, Southport and Morecambe.
Mr. Backhouse explained that when an additional vehicle was granted for the excursions in 1951. a mistake in the publication of the conditions resulted in all vehicles being restricted to operation from Padiham in Burnley's annual holiday week, instead of just the additional One.
• In evidence, Mrs. Pollard said Central Motors had no licences, but operated regularly on contract to football matches from Padiham. After Mr. Backhouse had .g,iven an undertaking that the activities of the two companies would be kept separate, the application was granted. Mr. Williamson said the football match excursions would be limited to Sabden.
