• Foden has joined the 500hp brigade by choosing Cummins' N500E 14-litre Euro-1 Celect engine for its 4000 Series tractive units (CM 1-7 April), designated 4500. Options are a 4x2, 6x2 twinsteer, 6x2 tag, 6x2 pusher and 6x4 double-drive.
The Celect package (CM 17-23 Sept 1992) incorporates a drive
by-wire system with built-in road speed governing, foot-off cruise control, engine speed protection, idle shutdown and a fuel consumption log. The 373kW (500hp) is produced at 1,900rpm with a relatively modest peak torque of 2,102Nm (1,5501bft) 1,200rpm; Cummins C-brake retarder is fitted as standard. Transmission options are Eaton Fuller's 15613 13-speed constant-mesh or a 16-speed ZE I 6S220 synchromesh: Eaton's lighter 12-speed 15612 Twin Splitter gearbox, rated at 2,080Nm, isn't man enough for the job but a stronger version is being developed which is also likely to be taken up by Iveco and MAN. The N500E is 110kg heavier than the non-Euro-1 465 Cummins engine it replaces.
The first 4500 series, geared for A-road running, is working out of Forres in Scotland with lain Munrow.
TNT has taken the first 400 Series equipped with the new, more powerful Cummins L10 350E Celect 10-litre engine which, rated at 1,695Nm (12501bft) at 1,200rpm, develops 32% more torque than the L10 325 it replaces.
L Doubt over the availability of Caterpillar's 14.6-litre engine has been resolved. Foden has decided to offer the 3406C unit, which meets the Euro-i emission standard without resorting to electronics.
