O by Miles Brignall )fficials policing the London .orry Ban are unfairly houndng several large operators, iccording to Lord Attlee.
He says he is receiving 'lots d flak" from several large leet operators who are con;erned about the way the ban s being enforced—they claim :hat some officials are waging vendetta against them. "Several cases have been wought to my attention by merators, particularly utility ;ompanies, who are )eing over-zealously )ursued by the Lorry ;ontrol Unit," says lthee. "It mostly con:erns vehicles which lave the correct permits :ravelling to sites just iutside the banned area.
The poor old driver s taking what seems he best route, on ;xempted roads, but is ;till being prosecuted iecause the officials leclare he should have :aken another, usually nuch longer, route."
Attlee plans to take advantage of the Local Government Transport for London Bill which is about to pass through the House of Lords to get this issue aired.
"The officials in many instances don't seem to be applying any judgement," he says. "The objective of my raising the matter in the house is to get the officials to behave in a reasonable way rather than blindly issuing tickets."
A spokesman for the Lorry Control Unit says it is difficult to comment without specific details, but he claims that in cases where a driver has gone slightly wrong after getting lost the LCU doesn't usually prosecute.
"Any operator can come to us and make a case for changing routes," he adds.
"If they can make a good environmental case for an alternative then we will always listen and act accordingly," he explains.
