Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• More than 400 drivers working on P&O Trans European's contract with Shell are to be balloted on industrial action.

Three rounds of negotiations have failed to bridge the gap between the Transport & General Workers Union's 8% pay claim and the company's offer of 2.5%. Ron Webb, the T&G's national secretary for road transport, reports that the offer was overwhelmingly rejected. "We will know the result of the ballot round about the first week in July," he says. The drivers' basic pay is £23,560 a year for a 45-hour week.

A P&O spokesman points out that the claim includes better fringe benefits which would cost an extra 64.

Ile reports that PM) Trans European Is in talks about the sale of its contract logistics division, which employs 7,000 people: "The ideal situation is to fled one party to take the business over to provide it with investment and grow it into a global player."

Webb says these negotiations are creating uncertainty among the T&G's 2,000 members within the company: "They want to know who their next employer is going to be and whether their terms and conditions will be protected—particularly their pension schemes."

• More than 600 DFDS drivers have accepted a 5% pay increase which they originally rejected against the advice of the T&G. A second ballot was ordered because fewer than two-thirds voted in the first ballot and the union said this was inconclusive.
