• by Miles Brignall British international hauliers have seen yet another fall in the number of UK-registered trucks heading to the Continent, according to the latest government figures.

The Department of Transport report Road Goods Vehicles Travelling to Mainland Europe shows that 617,600 i-IGVs travelled to the Continent; up 2% on the previous quarter. However, UK-registered vehicles accounted for just 28% of that figure, compared with 29% in the previous quarter and 31%a year ago.

Simon Chapman, chief economist at the Freight Transport Association, says its member! are under the cosh: "UK international hauliers an seeing business evaporate before their eyes whit Continental competition continues to prosper The strength of Sterling means that their costs an in a higher league than European operators.

"Furthermore," he adds, "the UK exports or which they rely to survive are being increasingl! handled by the large number of foreign operator: coming into the UK delivering imports."

Stuart Archbold of Leeds-based internationa operator Archbold Freightage says: "There's n( question that there's a lot of competition from for eign hauliers in the European market. We are con stantiy having to look for more business and hr more aggressive in that."

Some analysts believe that joining the nun would help UK international operators, Ix, Archbold disagrees: 'If we went into the eur( we would import all the problems inherent ii that system, which would not help our corn peti tive position."

• Unaccompanied cross-Channel traffic rose 9,1/ in the last quarter, largely on the back of thi problems with cross-Channel rail freight.
