NTERNATIONAL HARVESTER is the first US engine prolucer to announce an engine to meet the anticipated steep rise a demand for diesel power in American commercial vehicles. 'his major addition to its family of medium-duty diesel power [nits is a 549 cu in (9 litre) V8. A Seddon Atkinson spokesman aid that his company has no plans at present to introduce the ngine in the UK.

OFered in two versions, 123 :W (165 bhp) and 134 kW (180 )hp), this new engine is, says H, expected to be one of the owest-priced diesel engines tvailable in the USA. Both the 23 kW and 134 kW units proLuce their maximum power at !,800 rpm. The 123 kW version lelivers 456 km (336 lb ft/) argue at 1200 rpm and the 134 :W model 544 km (401 lb ft) at 200 .pm. Compression ratio is 9.1 to one, bore being 114 mm 4.5in) and stroke 109 mm 4.3in ).

The fuel system consists of n-line, multiple-plunger losch fuel injection pump nth a mechanical, flyball allpeed governor. A built-in exess uel device provides unided cold starts down to -18°C (0°F). Injection ozzles have a smaller iameter tip than on the other 1-1 engines to provide more oom in the head for coolant flow. Nozzles are mounted outside the cylinder head covers to ease servicing.

The flywheel accepts a 330 mm (13 in) two-plate clutch and the centrifugal belt-driven pump is separate from the viscous torque-limited fan drive for increased bearing life. The engine weighs 563.6 kg (1,270 lb).

Production is due to begin in August. The engine will then be available as standard equipment for ten International S.-Series (bonneted) and Cargostar (forward control) models in September.

The 123 kW engine will be standard for International model 1754 S-Series, model 1854 4 x 4 SSeries, model CO-1850 Cargostar medium trucks, and model 1853 S. Series school bus chassis (all in the 20,000-32,000 lb gross vehicle weight range). The 134 kW version will be the standard engine for models 1854, F-1954, 1954 6 x 6, 1955 S-Series and model CO-1950 and COF-1950 Cargostar trucks for applications up to 50,000 lb gvw/gcw ratings.

IH fuel consumption predictions are up to 11.02 mpg.

"When combined with the proven capabilities of our DT466 mid-range diesel engine, I do not see how any domestic or foreign competitor can challenge our leadership in this important and growing segment of the truck transportation industry," G. H. Dion, manager Medium Truck Marketing, North American Truck Operations has emphasised. International Harvester points out that it is the largest diesel truck manufacturer (classes 5-8) in North America.
