Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A New French Production Which is Designed to Lift Loads of From 15 cwt. to 35 cwt.

AITSEFTIL portable motor crane ,s ;ing ruirrd out by the Snessiia Co.. the great distributing firm which handles all the Schneidei. productions. The crane is mounted en the well 1.-nown 'ton H.8 A. type C.C.O. Schneide7 cuss cis, wh..-± is used all over the Continent 'rom Spain tt, Scandinavia in motor omnibuses and lorries. The engine employed in this ch4ssis is a very substantial job, and is very efficient. It has four separate c3linders, 110 mm. by 150 mm., and a normal speed of oni.y about 1,000 r.p.in.

The crane is -driven by a

separate shaft mounted above the ordinary propeller shaft of the lorry. The turntable of the crane, 'which runs on four steel rollers, is driven by worm and worm wheel, as also is the cable dram which operates the lifting of the jib. The winding drum of ibis crane itself is driven by ordinary bevel gearing. The levers arid pedals controlling the operation of the crane are placid immediately behind the driving seat of the lorry.

When ihe crane is 1.0 be used, the driver throws the separate shaft into action before leaving his seat: he then gets round behind and the driving seat binges forward to accommodate him. Two little jacks are fitted between the rear axle and the lorry chassis, By means of these the springs can be put ont of action so that whilst the crane is at work the chassis remains absolutely rigid and level. This arrangement also permits the lorry to be driven slowly along with a load suspended from the crane.

A good feature of the Scemia crane is the very lowposition of the winding gear and counterpoise which gives free vision in all directions to the operator. The height of the vehicle with the crane jib dropped forward into the normal position which it occupies under road condition is 14 ft. 6 ins., and the overall

length about 22 ft. The Scemia crane should he useful for contractors work of all kinds and also for shipyards and docks. According to the radius, the crane can raise loads of from 800 kilos. to 1,900 kilos (15 cwt. to 35 cwt.) from 2 metres 80 centimetres to 5 metres from ground level (9 ft. to 16 ft.). When

lowering a load the engine is kept in gear with the winding drum, and a powerful foot brake can be brought into action. The fact of the engine remaining in gear during the descent also obviates the necessity for ballasting the crane hook to make it run down better when empty.
