EXCESSIVE hours worked by Stagecoach of Perth's drivers were described as "staggering" by Sheriff John Wheatley at Perth last week.
Stagecoach admitted 14 charges of allowing drivers to exceed the legal working day. The court was told that during a two-week period the excess working time totalled 271 hours.
The worse case involved a driver who logged 57 hours too many during a four-day spell.
Company director Ann Gloag said that the drivers were not necessarily at the wheel for the periods quoted. Duty hours could include time spent as passengers when they were waiting to relieve other drivers.
But Malcolm MacPhail, prosecuting, said that the offences were the type which could put the travelling public at risk. The sheriff postponed sentence until April 29 for further information.
