HE MINISTER of Transport has awarded grants to two rmpanies to encourage them to use rail transport instead of ad haulage to move their aggregates.

The grant, made up to the value of 50 per cent of the capital )st of private rail facilities and wagons, can be made where this ads to worthwhile environmental benefits and where the eight would otherwise go by road.

Receiving the grant from Norman Fowler are Tarmac Roadone (Northern) Ltd and Redland Aggregates. Tarmac gets 17,000 for a fleet of privately owned wagons plus terminal iprovements, while Rediand receives £123,000 towards the cost ' a new rail distribution depot in Lincolnshire.
