BY USING air suspension on five of its York Freightmaster semi-trailers, Express Dairy. (Northern) Ltd has been able to develop a quick and simple method of loading and unloading crated milk.
The Hands Neway air suspension fitted to the trailers is lowered by 6in allowing the palleted crates, mounted on floor-mounted rollers, to roll out under their own weight. Each pair of pallets are retained by clips so that they may be unloaded one pair at a time. Transverse levelling valves in the air suspension compensate for asymmetric loading so that a row of 12 full pallets, weighing about 9 tons can be left on one side while on the other there is a 6-ton row of empties.
Loading is carried out in a similar manner, except that the suspension is inflated so that the palleted crates can run forward. Loading of the 24 pallets, each containing 36 crates, can be carried out in under 15 minutes.
