THE seven-week-old unofficial strike by drivers of refrigerated meat lorries in Liverpool is to be taken to arbitration as a means of settling the issue. Mr Bob Robinson, road haulage officer at the Liverpool district of the TGWU, told CM that an independent arbitrator would judge the issue. The arbitrator, from the Department of Employment and chosen by the Department, would hear the case on July 9, and both sides would be expected to honour his decision.
The drivers, about 280, called the strike in support of a wage claim they made on May 13. They were seeking a 55-hour guaranteed week, .subsistence payment of £4.50 and a sickness benefit
scheme of £14.50 a week. Mr Robinson went on to say that he had suggested to the drivers that they return to work until the issue had been settled but they decided against this.
