Electric searchlights of immense power were employed by the various European armies as made units to guide aeroplanes back to their landing ground or to discover enemy preparations. The biggest of these, searchlights were carried on special trailers, and were hauled by a motor lorry which also carried the electric generating set. One of these, built. by the Fiat' Co., is shown on the accompanying illustration. The searchlight, which is fitted on a well-sprung four-wheel trailer with rear wheel brakes, has a face diameter of 80 ins. The generating set, which ;s carried on 'wheels, can be lif%ti -out' of the lorry, when used for supplying current.
