An ingenious arrangement of selfstarter involving the iieeof:capsules containing highly-compressed explosive gas is the subject of patent epecification,No. 128,259 by E. Dodson. The capsule or cartridge is contained in a suitably. designed receptacle in the form of a hollew cylinder which embraces the exterior of the capsule or cartridget•and, together with an elastic seating, makes an airtight joint. Below the seating. is a vertical pointer pierced in the centre with .a passage' which leads to a delivery pipe. A standard by the side of: thef-eapSule cairiee at ita upper end a pivot for the operating lever, and above the pivot is an adjustable trigger arrangement.

The delivery pipe leads to a distributing valve suitably mounted on the end of the camshaft, Pipes lead from the distributing valve, one to each cylinder, and at the junction between cylinder and -pipe there is in every case a nonreturn valve. The object of the diStriLuting valve is, of 4-201MSO, to place the main delivery pipe into communication with that cylinder which is at the time prepared to receive the eeeloeive mixtiu e.

The operation and action of the apparatus will readily be understood. The starting lever is depressed and forces the inner end of the capsule upon the vertical projection, this pierces it and releases the gas. When the lever is fully dengssed the trigger arrangement, 'which we have mentioned; secures it in that position, so that there is no fear of the capsule dying out under the influence of the pressure of the gas.The released gas passes along the delivery pipe to the distributor valve -and thence to that cylinder which is about to commence its working stroke. It is therefore ignited either by a starting mag C50 neto or by a properly timed electrical distributor. If thereers gas still left in the distributing valve after the engine has commenced to run, it will naturally flow into the next cylinder available fee an explosion.

The Holley _Carburetter Co., in epecification No. 128;525, describes an ar. rangement of earburetterwhich allows the use of two or more fuels either independently or mixed in various proportions. Aespecially designed multi-way

cock, which also acts as a mixing chamber; permits the entry, through one or other of passages -formed within it., of either petrol, paraffin or a mixture of these fuels.. The fluid is drawn by ene gine suction into the interior of the plug cf the cock where it takes -up a small peeportiou of air and passes to the vaporizer, afterwards enteringethe carburetter proper and receiving the ekessary air for further dilution.

A new nut-locking -device has been patented • by G. Constantinesco• in patent specification No. 128,276. Two nuts are used and in the adjacent faces are cut deep grooves. A Single ring is compressed into these grooves, and the two nuts with ring then form due unit.

They are used in the ordinary -way as nut and lock mit, the "object of the ring being to prevent relative movement of the two nuts when they are locked in -place, and: it performs WS function owing to Abe. additional friction provided by the tight MUT', ring.

For additional safety, the ring and nuts may be coated with solder, and when they are locked in place the application of heat will render them more secure.

Patent No. 128,258 is a priming' apparatus for starting an engine on petrel. when its, normal fuel is paraffin. A couple of tubes ternainate. at their lower 'ends in a chamber, the entrance to which is by a small hole; they are secured at their upper eeds to .a cap Which will screw on to the nipple of an ordinary petrol can. One tube is coupled to the engine induction pipe, the other is open to the atmosphere. Oh starting of the engine a 'supply of petrol' is drawn from. the tank. The patentee is A. A.-Mercer.

TheBiriningham Small Arms Co., Ltd:, patents in specification NO, 128,249 an arrangement of tappet and guide: A horizontal projection on the tappet engagea with a slot in the guide. The top of the tappet is screwed to receive a blank ended nut which bears on the underside of the valve stem, and which provides fer adjestreent. The lock nut, which 'occupies the usual position belcelv this, has a downwardly projectine• sleeve which covers the upper end of the guide and thus serves to exclude

dust or dirt. .

No. 128,235, Caterpillar Tractors, Ltd., provides for the reversibility of the link pins of the track and thus renders available double the usual amount Of wearing surface.. The pin has an L bead at one "end and is drilled for a cOtter, pin at the other. Prevision is made in the designof the link for either L bead or cotter to be retained against slots in the casting, no matter from which side the.pin may be inserted.

No. 128,522 is a new design of roller hearingpatented by Ge Bradshaw. , The outer race is flanged and only that portion against which the .rollers bear is .hardened. This, of couree, gives greater tena.city to the material of the flange which is used for starting the bearing, and, moreover, it is claimed that as the flange is centrally disposed, a little spring is allowed in the race itself, and the liability 'a the ends of the rollers te. chip; owing to excessive loading, ie thereby avoided.
