• Roads and Traffic Minister Christopher Chope has again ruled out a national register of HGV training schools. At the opening of the new Driver Standards Agency offices in Nottingham, he said it was best for the industry to set its own standards. The DSA says it wants the wait for HGV tests to be kept to four weeks maximum, but has said that a Brussels proposal to force drivers to pass an HGV III before sitting their HGV I could increase demand for tests by 80% in 1992.
