• Ford is investing £194m in its Halewood, Merseyside plants — £24m is being spent on the transmission plant with £170m for the Escort car and van assembly site next door.
The transmission plant gets new gear cutting equipment; the shopping list for the assembly plant includes refurbishment for the new Escort lines and more automation. The major expense has been a threephase programme to integrate van and car final assembly into a single line; this has cost kfirn for the final phase alone.
Other improvements include new equipment on the pressing lines, a replacement furnace and air compressor.
