A FURTHER revision of workmen's I-% and concessionary fares may have to be made by the West Riding Automobile Co., Ltd., the chairman, Sir Ronald G. Leon, told the company's annual meeting, in London, last week. Adequate services at cheap rates were vital in an industrial area such as was served by the company, he said, but the continuance of heavy taxation, and rising wage rates, made it commercially impossible for undertakings to cater properly for increasing peak traffic and to provide additional services demanded by rapidly developing housing estates and rural areas, Higher fares introduced in January c4 last year resulted in a reduction in the number of longer-distance passengers, many of whom were now travelling by rail where parallel services were in operation and cheap daily return fares available. The number of shortdistance passengers that the company carried had risen.
Traffic revenue showed a small but steady increase, and there were indications of price reductions in some of the more important materials used.
Shortage of staff and a high rate of absenteeism were among the company's chief difficulties.
