THE South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., are to apply for a further increase in fares in consequence of the recent wage awards which will cost them an additional £35.000-140,000 a year. Making this announcement at the company's annual meeting last week, Mr. J. S. Wills, said that the last fare rise, which was put into force on March 29, 1953, was bringing in almost exactly the additional revenue they had estimated, although there was a slight recession in traffic. "The new fares might have continued to be sufficient but for a further substantial wage increase," he said. Decision was still awaited on appeals by a number of local authorities against the grant of those increases. Approximately half of the 500,000 extra miles run during the year was operated by the former Llanelly Traction undertaking, which had its first full year's operation under the company's control during 1953. Extended tours, said Mr. Wills, were covering new ground this year by running to Italy and Spain.
