riA TRANSPORT show was held by the Liverpool group of the North Western Gas Board last week to encourage careful driving and good maintenance by competition. The group operate 113 vehicles, of which all but 10 were eliminated in preliminary heats.
At the commencement of the qualifying period of 12 months, each vehicle and driver were credited with an allotment of 480 points. Every vehicle was inspected monthly and points were either retained or lost, according to its condition.
The maximum number of points it was possible to lose at a monthly inspection was 40, assessed as follows: engine, 6; chassis, 3; axles, 2; wheels, 4; tyres, 5; brakes, 2; battery, 1; lights, 2; body, 5; petrol lock, 2; cab, 2; log book, 1; oil, 1; water, 1; doors, 2; and gearbox, I. All vehicles were handicapped according to age, mileage, type of work engaged upon and date last painted.
The 10 vehicles which survived the heats were paraded and inspected by independent experts. The winner was Mr. W. Hcsketh, driver of a 1947 Morris-Commercial 3-tonner,.
